A project by Art for The World

THE PROJECT

With When Heaven Invades the Earth, Christina Oiticica continues an artistic research based on the collaboration between art and the forces of nature. On June 5, 2026, one of the artist’s works was submerged in the waters of Lake Maggiore, near Isola San Giovanni Borromeo. Having remained underwater for three months, it will be transformed by the movements of the lake, light, currents, and microorganisms.

This work, metamorphosed by nature, will be presented to the public at the Grand Hôtel Majestic in Pallanza-Verbania alongside around forty drawings and paintings. The exhibition makes visible the central process of her work: allowing time and natural elements to become co-authors of the artwork.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Christina Oiticica is an internationally renowned Brazilian artist living in Geneva. Her work explores the connections between nature, time, and transformation. Close to Land Art practices, she incorporates natural elements (earth, water, minerals) into her works and often leaves her creations at the mercy of the elements: whether buried, submerged, or exposed to the weather, they evolve through contact with nature.

Her work has developed across the Amazon, Europe, the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean islands, and Lake Maggiore, as well as along the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), a major source of spiritual inspiration. As the muse and partner of writer Paulo Coelho, she has accompanied him on his travels and spiritual projects, developing a close affinity with themes of introspection and inner awakening.
